Men's Health Q&A

Why Are Annual Screenings Important?

Men are statistically more likely to avoid going to the doctor until they are sick, and in many cases, conditions that could have been treated quickly and easily, have progressed to a much more serious state. In general, men are at high risk for a number of conditions including cardiovascular disease, lung cancer, prostate cancer, depression, diabetes and erectile dysfunction. Getting regular screenings will help to catch any conditions in early stages where preventative medicine or behavioral changes can be used to treat or manage a condition before it progresses.

What Happens During a Prostate Exam?

There are two screening tests for prostate cancer. The PSA test is a blood test which checks the levels of prostate specific antigen in the blood. The normal level is less than four nanograms per milliliter. Although there is a range, elevated or low levels do not necessarily indicate cancer. The PSA may be done on its own or in conjunction with the other screening test, the digital rectal exam (DRE). During this process the doctor inserts a gloved and lubricated finger into the rectum to feel for any abnormalities. If either of these tests show signs of cancer, the doctor will order further tests. Men with low risk of prostate cancer should be checked annually starting at age 50. Men at higher risk, such as those with a family history of the disease, should start screening at 40.

What are the Signs and Treatments for Erectile Dysfunction?

There is a lot of stigma and shame attached to erectile dysfunction. Dr. Villivalam will discuss the facts and treatments with his patients discreetly to ensure that the underlying issue is resolved. Erectile dysfunction is caused by a number of conditions, both physical and emotional, ranging from stress and lifestyle to cardiovascular issues. If a man is having issues with this, he should speak to a doctor. The treatment can range from lifestyle changes, like stopping smoking and getting more exercise, to more serious medical treatment for other conditions causing the dysfunction.
